Hillary's Loss Is Not Women's Failure

by Connie Schultz

Last week, I gave my daughter a small plaque painted with the words of a Japanese proverb.

It was a mother's gift to celebrate her new apartment and to remind her that she is ready for whatever life throws at her. I couldn't help but think, though, that the six little words at its center were a potent reminder for me, too, in these days following the primary election defeat of Hillary Clinton:

Re: Betty Phillips I don't agree with you at all. At least, not about Senator Clinton. Your article confirmed my worst fear- that women throughout the country would vote for Clinton merely because of her sex. How many women throughout the years have complained about men and how they would blindly follow a man, not for his ideals, but because of the fact that he was a man? How could you say that you didn't always agree with her standpoints, but who cares? That's the whole point of voting for someone- because you agree with what they plan to do with their time at office! I am a woman, and while I would be overjoyed to have a woman president, I didn't want Clinton. I don't believe in voting for whomever is running just because she's a woman and it'd be a victory for all women to have a female president. I think that blindly following Senator Clinton and swallowing whatever tripe she threw at you, simply because she's a woman sends the wrong impression to Americans about women. I hope to have a woman president in my lifetime, but if the time comes to vote between a woman candidate that has ideas and plans I don't believe in, or a male candidate that has the same ideals as I do, you can bet I'll be voting for the man. I believe in voting for the best person running, not for what that person has in their pants.
