Opportunity Knocks

by William Moyers

John McCain and Barack Obama were on the never-ending campaign trail again last week, and for once, one of the candidates actually talked about the never-ending war on drugs.

William, Great topic this week. The "war on drugs" should be faught MUCH closer to home than Columbia. Everytime we see a study showing the "decrease" in one particular drug, their is an increase in consumption of another. Supply and demand economics are much more dangerous a foe than "Columbian" (or any other) drug lords. Until we start at home decreasing the need/want for drugs in our society and increasing the age at which children begin to experiment and sell drugs, the worse the problem gets here, at home. Drug courts are a good start but the availability of treatment and intervention for those who can benefit from it needs to be expanded. Programs like drug testing in our society, especially of those collecting unemployement or recieving a government paycheck may help significantly reduce the numbers of people buying and using illegal drugs. It has worked in drug courts and in impaired professionals programs to reduce use and increase recovery rates. Random drug screening is fast becoming part of professional sports and other contract related fields. Lets start to lead by example again in this country and begin to discuss ways to stop the demand for drugs. Maybe then, we will really see some progress in the centuries old war on drugs. Sincerely, Michael E. Walsh
